Most workshops
are taught in a ‘trick by trick’ style, which is useful
for learning specific skills, but may ultimately hinder
your creativity. Here, we will be building the
foundations of movement and technique with a variety of
different props. Divided into two parts, this two-hour
course focuses on both creativity and instruction. It is
an unconventional, revolutionary approach to learning
single-object manipulations. Think of it this way: If
this was a college course, and you were majoring in
juggling, this would be Object Manipulation 210: Concepts
and Practice, and it would be a prerequisite for
everything.
Part One is instruction. We will cover five fundamental
types of isolations, demonstrating how knowledge is
transitive between clubs, balls, boxes, sticks, rings,
and hoops. Exercises will help integrate this information
in a way that is easily digestible and fun. Basic mime
technique will be covered as well.
Following the instructional portion, Part Two will allow
you to experiment with different
props, learning firsthand how these concepts can be
integrated. During this time, I will be available for
more personalized clarification, answering any questions
and tossing out new ideas for students to try. With a
variety of props at your disposal and the encouragement
to try them all, your mind will be overflowing with new
ideas.
PREREGISTER!
Due to the
intensive nature of this class, there are only 10 spaces
available! If there’s enough interest, I’ll see what I
can do about booking the space for a second class.
Eugene workshops coming soon!
Also, it’s the holidays. If you have issues with
admission cost, contact Dustin via email.
About
Dustin:
Dustin
has been teaching hoop manipulation and poi classes for a
year. He currently performs with Portland’s Batty’s
Hippodrome Circus. He’s performed with poi and hoops on
stage at the 2006 International Juggler’s Association
‘Tricks of Light’ show, and his hoop manipulation routine
recently won 3rd place in the Portland Mercury’s Pizazz!
city-wide talent contest. Dustin also works with rings
and stage balls, preferring simpler props for
experimental object manipulation.
